All joints can be damaged by wear & tear, injury or certain diseases. The indications for a knee replacement are severe pain in the knee associated with activity as well as severe interference with daily activities and work. The knee is the largest joint in the body. A total knee replacement is the name given to the operation in which the damaged bone surfaces of the knee joint are removed and replaced with an artificial knee joint. The new components are stabilized by your ligaments & muscles- that are left in place. Following surgery you may stand or begin walking on the day of surgery. You are usually in the hospital for 3-5 days. You will begin working with a physical therapist who will begin teaching you exercises as well as assisting you with ambulation
